Recreation Centre for People with Disabilities

Landscape Platform

Adaptation and Extension of old chapel to become a Sports and Social Centre for People with Disabilities (Cairde Le Chéile)

Donegal Special Olympics wanted to adapt this neo-romanesque chapel (1938) into a sporting and cultural facility for people with special needs. The existing hall is open and flexible and therefore highly suitable for sports or concerts etc. We wanted to accommodate all the new supporting facilities (Café, Toilets, Changing Rooms, Gym, Storage, Computer room, and Administration) in a way that would not disrupt the volume and integrity of the existing chapel hall. The chapel is located on the hillside overlooking the Town Park and Letterkenny to the south. A landscape strategy was developed to manipulate the ground levels to create a platform overlooking the park. The Platform will provide the outdoor seating area for a café for both the public and the building users. The new facilities are located under this platform with the change in level giving them direct access to the park.
