LID Architecture - Landscape Room

Landscape Room

The project is located in Sligo’s Yeats’ Country and looks down onto Glencar lake, surrounded by table-top mountains. The refurbishment of existing involved complete spatial re-organisation, opening it up and improving natural lighting and circulation. Plywood joinery- including staircases- was designed for the entire house, which together with the new limestone floor throughout, brings calmness and consistency to the dwelling and helps to maximise space.

The main strategy was to break out from the restrictive form of the existing to create a “Landscape Room”, partly internal, partly external, orientated to the south-west, and surrounded by the landscape. The room was conceived as a sun-filled space, which can be used as a lounge, reading room, as well as dining- it is connected to the kitchen. A pond in the landscape room takes the rainwater from the roof and draws the eye and mind to a larger garden pond and, beyond it, to the lake itself.

Special Mention, AAI Awards 2010
